Emergency Assistance has always been the program of priority since Human Services was founded in 1955.  In 2006, the Board of Directors revised the criteria and Emergency Assistance became a matching program.  The purpose of the Emergency Assistance Program is to help individuals and families experiencing financial hardship.  It is not designed to be a permanent source of household funding but rather help when the client cannot find other alternatives when they are facing a “life altering” crisis.
To be eligible, the individual or head of household must live within the Canal Winchester School District.  They will need to make a written request listing the assistance they are seeking.  Those needing help with rent must include lease or mortgage payment information including the landlord or mortgager’s name, address, phone, account number if applicable, amount of the monthly payment and the amount that the client is currently past due.  Those seeking utility assistance must include a copy of their past due bill and $500.00 is the maximum any client receive over a five year period.
"Blessed are those who give without remembering and blessed are those who take without forgetting"
If the client meets the eligibility requirements, Human Services will then match the payment made by the client up to, but not to exceed, $250.00, depending on the circumstance.  In addition, $250.00 is the maximum assistance that can be provided to any client within a twelve month period.

To apply for Emergency Assistance, you must send a written request to:  Canal Winchester Human Services, 80 Covenant Way, Canal Winchester, Ohio 43110.  Included in your letter, please indicate your need.  If you are asking for rent/mortgage assistance, you must include either a copy of your lease or a mortgage bill which lists the landlords' or mortgage holder's name, address and phone number.  Indicate your monthly obligation and the amount you are past due.

If you are requesting assistance for a utility, you must enclose a copy of the past due or disconnect notice which includes your name and address, and the name and address of the utility along with a balance due.

For all other requests, please contact Canal Winchester Human Services at 614-834-3888 or email us at aletha.cwhs@gmail.com.

Canal Winchester Human Services has been coordinating a holiday assistance program since it first began back in 1955.  In 2005, the program was expanded and became known as “Adopt A Family”.  We are pleased to offer a wide range of assistance to help families that are struggling during the holiday season.  While many programs are geared around toys and the “fun” of Christmas, we believe it is important to serve all the needs of each child that is “adopted” through our Program.  Each child receives not only toys, but also clothes and a pair of shoes.    We also provide a good, used coat to all those that need one and a food basket for each family.

For those in need of assistance, please click (HERE)  to retrieve our application form.  Applications are accepted from October 1 thru Thanksgiving.  Applications received after Thanksgiving will be considered for limited assistance, dependent on the resources available.

For those wanting to contribute or volunteer, please email penny.cwhs@gmail.com or call 614.834.3888 for more information.

Donations can be dropped at the Community Center (22 South Trine Street) beginning December 1.  Financial contributions can be made by donating through our website, or mailing a check to 22 South Trine Street.
Children receive clothes and shoes, coats with hats and mittens, toys from Santa, a Christmas ham and groceries.
We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with the City of Canal Winchester, local churches and various groups to provide services that benefit our community that include:

“COMMUNITY CARE DAY”

Each May, the “Seniors to Seniors” project brings the High School Football Team together with the elderly population for a Saturday morning during which time the football players help senior citizens with outside yard work such as landscaping, cleaning porches, setting lawn furniture, etc. in preparation for the summer months.

Seniors citizens must live in the Canal Winchester School District and while the service is free, participation must be pre-registered by signing up at the City’s Community Center (614.837.8276) or by calling the Human Services office at 614.834.3888.

“TOOLS FOR SCHOOLS”

Available to the Canal Winchester School District since 2006, this project provides school bags with grade appropriate supplies for children who live in and attend the Canal Winchester School District, and who would otherwise not be able to afford them. To be eligible, there must be a financial need within the family.  The student must be a full time resident of the School District and attend Canal Winchester Local Schools.  Registration is available beginning July 15 through Labor Day.  For more information or to register, please call 614.834.4700.

Donations of new book bags and/or new school supplies are gratefully accepted at the COMMUNITY Food Pantry, the Community Center, Faith, Hope, Hopewell, Lithopolis United Methodist Churches, and David’s UCC, David Evangelical Lutheran and Gender Road Christian Churches. Financial contributions are tax-deductible and help purchase supplies that are not donated.

Thanks to special funding from the Franklin County Office of Aging and the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation, and in partnership with the Canal Winchester Community Center, we are pleased to provide local day trips two or three times each month that include visits to the Columbus Zoo, musical concerts and Broadway shows, tours of interest, shopping trips, etc.
To participate, you must be 50 years or older, and be a member in good standing of the Canal Winchester Senior Citizens Club.  For more information, or to sign up for an upcoming day trip, please contact the Community Center at 614.837.8276.

“SENIOR OUTREACH”

Throughout the year, Canal Winchester Human Services partners closely with the City’s Community Center and Canal Winchester Senior Citizens Club.

Since 2015, we have partnered with the High School Student Council and provided the “Senior” Prom.  The evening of dinner and dance is enjoyed by all involved.

Each Tuesday, we help with the congregate senior lunch that is prepared and served at the Community Center and once a month, we call the lunch “Soup Kitchen”.  Instead of paying for the lunch, donations of food and money are contributed to the COMMUNITY Food Pantry Program.

VFW COMMUNITY HALLOWEEN PARTY

Human Services is happy to partner with the Canal Winchester VFW Post 10523 organization by hosting a community Halloween Party each year for the enjoyment of the District’s school children.  Immediately following the City of Canal Winchester’s trick-or-treat, children are invited and encouraged to meet at the Canal Winchester Community Center for games, entertainment and refreshments.  For more information, contact the Canal Winchester Community Center at 614-837-8276.
