Ohio Benefit Bank

Ohio was one of the first states to establish a Benefit Bank.  The program is computer based and after an interview that lasts about an hour, families in need will immediately know any state-funded programs for which they might be eligible to receive assistance.  This includes food stamps, federal free lunch, health insurance, etc.  Human Services established the Benefit Bank in 2008 and currently it is available by contacting the Canal Winchester Food Pantry at 614-837-7734.  For families with children in the Canal Winchester School District, they may also contact any guidance counselor in any of the four buildings as they have all be trained as Benefit Bank counselors.  To learn more about the Ohio Benefit Bank, please visit their website at www.obb.ohio.gov.

Canal Winchester Football For Food

The 2011 Football For Food Campaign was held September 9.  Spectators and fans were asked to bring non-perishable items for donation to the Food Pantry.

For the fourth year, this community event also included “Pizza for Food”.  This year we received contributions from the entire School District including grades Kindergarten through senior high.  All students were encouraged to participate and the winning class from each building received a pizza party for their efforts.

The combined effort of Pizza for Food and Football for Food provided more than 11,000 food and household items, and over $2,000 in financial contributions.  Thank you, Indians, for helping us feed our hungry!

VFW Community Halloween Party

Human Services is happy to partner with Canal Winchester’s VFW organization by hosting a community Halloween Party each year for the enjoyment of the District’s school children.  Immediately following trick-or-treating within the Village, children are invited and encouraged to meet at the Canal Winchester Community Center for games, entertainment and refreshments.  For more information, contact the Canal Winchester Community Center at 614-837-8276.
Canal Winchester Food Pantry

Canal Winchester Human Services will officially acquire The Canal Winchester Food Pantry on November 17, 2011. In January, 2012, the name will be changed to “The Community Food Pantry” when if effectively begins serving Lithopolis, Carroll, and rural areas of Fairfield County which are underserved.

The second annual Community Holiday Concert will coincide with this year’s Christmas in the Village event and will be held Sunday, December 4, 2:00, in the Old Middle School Auditorium.  Various local churches will fill the afternoon with the sounds of the holidays.  The concert is free but we will be pleased to accept donations of toys, food and money which will be used to support the Adopt A Family Program.

We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with various Canal Winchester groups and organizations in our effort to serve the residents of our community:
At the same time, the Pantry will be relocated to a 4,000 square food parcel located at 360 West Waterloo.  Until then, the Food Pantry will continue to operate as it has the last 30 years out of David’s United Church of Christ.  If you have inquires or need more information, please contact Penny Miller at 834-3888 or email her at ButtonBow@aol.com.
